More Altec in the Studio

Wondered the same thing. I don't see anyway that 2235 would be appropriate for an 816 cabinet. Now, a 2035 on the other hand.............. I run 2035's in my 828 cabinets and they're superb right down to the cut-off of the horn.

So what configuration are you thinking about for the cave .. ? Would you be re-using the 828's .. ? or going to 816's .. ?

I'm kind of torn. If i lopped the reflex portion of my 828's off, that'd save having to build the most difficult part of the system. But, i'd no longer have my 828's. I suppose i could always build another pair if i missed them terribly.

I have also considered building a pair of larger mid-bass horns using the flare rate of the 815 cabinet, but at ~half the height to just house a single 15. Maybe look at a sloped bottom panel to keep the top and bottom panels non-parallel.

For the woofer boxes i have a quad of Emilar EW-15's. I'll have to revisit testing their T/S parameters. I think they should be able to extend below 20hz at significant SPL's in tandems. They're going to want large boxes.

My jury is still out on the HF. If i can get a large format Altec horn and driver combination to give me the HF extension i want, that's the way i'll go, and my first choice. I'd like to stay as Altec as possible. But, i also have a real bug to try a pair of the 1.4 inch exit BMS duplex(4593ND) HF drivers on mantarays as an old rock n roll buddy has done with what he feels are exceptional results.

I've got lots of time to think about it as i have a house to build first. We're probably looking at 2014 before i can start this project. But, 2014 will get here quicker than y'all think.

Yeah that BMS 4593ND definitely looks interesting .. Is he using it at home .. ? What size Mantaray is your buddy using .. ? I would love to hear what that combo sounds like .. Those Emilar 15"s appear to be pretty rare .. are they tapped horn candidates or BR's .. I have a soft spot for the large format Altec stuff and am just researching / collecting info & some hardware myself.
